Thumri forms the main compositional form that is identifed with the genre of 'Upa Shastriya Sangit' or allied form of Hindustani classical music. Under the umrella of Thhumri compositional forms like Dadra, Kajri, Chaiti, Hori are included. Thumri has simple and short poetry that is improvised under the framewrok of Raga and various expressions suggested by the poetry as well as the Ragas. The Ragas chosen have inherent flexibility to push the boundry in order to bring out the expression. This course elaborates three compositions in the forms - Kajri and Dadra in Ragas Mishra Khamaj, Khamaj and Pahadi.  

Objectives

To develop an understanding of the Raga structures 

To do Swar Vistar in the Ragas chosen

To do Swar Sadhana with focus on specific vocal exercises that aid this vocal style

To learn the Bandish or compositions based on Khamaj and Pahadi in different Laya structures of Dadra

To develop the Bandishes of Kajri and Dadra within the Taal structure and the framework of the Raga

To learn about using elements of other Ragas to depict glipses of different emotions that a composition demands.

The student needs to have completed HV304.

The student is able to present the compositions- Kajri and Dadra with improvisational elements of the Thumri Ang fluently within the Taal structures of Dadra and Deepchandi
